Parceling the bike is something many people do on long trips. It will help a lot to save days and reduce expenses on journeys. When going for the first time, many people may have a lack of knowledge or confusion about how to do this. We were also in such a situation at first. So the first thing to do after booking the train was to go to the railway station and meet the parcel handler. There is a person named Selvam who does all this at the Chennai railway station. He told us everything in detail. It has been said on the railway website that it is enough to go 2 hours before the departure of the train and make things ready for sending. But when we inquired directly, we were told that it is better to go at least at 7 am and do the booking, packing, etc., and after that, it is enough to go when the train is about to leave. Because, if more parcels arrive that day, going earlier will help us to send our parcel first.

We can send goods in two ways.

  1. Luggage

While choosing this way, our booking will be linked with the PNR number and the item to be packed. The goods to be sent will be loaded on the train by which we would also be travelling. We will reach the destination along with the luggage. It is an easy and hassle-free way, although it costs a little more money. There are a few things to keep in mind when shipping large items like bikes.

  • It would be beneficial if we choose the train such that it starts from the station we want to board and ends at the station where we want to get off. When the goods are big, it takes time to load and unload them on the train. The train will not stop for long at the stations in between. Therefore, if we do not get time, we cannot send the goods. Then it will have to be sent on the next train or something.
  • If possible, establish an acquaintance with the person in charge of the parcel in advance. It helps to send the bike well wrapped without major damage.
  • All the petrol should be removed from the bike and the inside of the tank should be cleaned. Then only it will be loaded into the train. While doing this, make sure that it is properly done. If possible have a bottle or something to hold the petrol in the tank. We can pour in any of our other vehicles. Do not under any circumstances attempt to take this petrol with you on the train. This is a crime that can even lead to imprisonment if caught.
  • Take photos of the bike being wrapped and parcelled on the train.
  • Make sure all the fibre parts of the bike are well covered.
  • Make sure nothing else is placed on top of the bike.
  • Keep the receipt after paying the parcel fee. It should be shown and then the vehicle can be collected from the station of arrival. If you get rid of it, it will be much more difficult.

2. Parcel

When sent as a parcel, these items will reach their destination at any time. PNR number is not mandatory. But when we send it like this, it is not possible that the product will be with us when we arrive. It can also arrive a little late. It would be better to do all the checks mentioned above when sending the bike as a parcel as well. Goods can be delivered more cost-effectively here than sending them as luggage.

While sending the bike, the fee is determined according to the engine power of the bike. For low power, charges will be less and for higher power, charges will be more.

The detailed fee information can be found in the following links.

There will be two charges; parcel charges and charges to cover the bike. Parcel charges will be billed. The charge for covering the bike will vary according to each station and its staff. It is unlikely to get billed. If we give a little more amount, the bike will be properly packed and loaded.

Once the billing is done, we will get the tracking number from the bill. It can also be tracked on the website of the railway.

In both the methods, the goods will be stored free of cost at the station for up to 6 hours. After that, an hourly fee will be charged. A message will be sent to the given mobile number while loading and unloading the goods at the station. You can go and collect the item after receiving the message that it has been unloaded.

We sent the bike as luggage. Everything went without a hitch. Hope this article is helpful for those who travel long distances on bikes.
